This is my new Texas Cichlid. I have been watching this guy at the LFS every day for 2 weeks. The colors are outstanding but the belly concerns me it seems sunk in a bit. He was hiding every time I went in to look at him but would come out to inspect me if I stayed still. The people at the LFS said he is terrified of the arrowana in the tank next to him, which seemed to be true. (no idea why they didnt move him) So I wonder if he is just wan't eating enough due to stress. I have been waiting for him to waste away or get better and neither was happening, so I brought him home yesterday. He eats a little but not vigorously. No white poop but I haven't seen any poop at all.

The LFS I got him at is pretty good. They dose all the tanks with meds once a week to prevent IP's I never have bought a sick fish from them. They said he has been eating pellets every morning. I can dose my tank with meds but would rather not cause my wife complains of the smell and I hate adding chemicals to a healthy tank.

First, he's not a Texas. It is definitely a Carpintis (as to which variant, that would be hard to say). Second, It's been my experience that many LFS Cichlids (or fish for the matter) have emaciated bellies due to stress and/or little feeding. I'm sure he will be fine and full once you get him settled in and start providing larger/regular meals.

I thought Carpintis and Cyano where both called Texas cichlids, no? I also thought the carpintis had the small blue dots and the Cyano had the larger blue pearls. I thought this one was a Cyano. regardless of what he is I think he is beautiful but it would be nice to have a positive ID.

Regards to the belly thanks that is what I thought I just wanted to hear someone else say it to calm my nerves.

I think some hobbyists refer to them as "Green Texas Cichlids". However, the true Texas Cichlid (Herichthys Cyanoguttatus) displays much smaller spots/pearls.

I guess I had the marking switched around. It is really hard to identify the internet shows so many conflicting pics. That is probably why people referred to both as texas. I actually have one of each I think they are both outstanding looking fish.

Do you think you could ID my two cichlids. ? One yellow ones lighter blue with black stripes. Also have a health question about yellow if you have any knowlege there?

Ash - start a new thread.

To the OP, my advice would be to feed NLS Hex Shield to your new fish. My other advice appears to be too late, which would have been to place that fish into a QT tank, especially if you suspected it to have health issues. Good luck.
