I have been keeping tropicals for the last 11 years and have decided that I'm tired of all the little fish with no personalities swimming around in my tank. So I have decided to switch to cichlids. My first thought was SA/CA cichlids but decided that have 2-3 fish in a tank wasn't appealing. So I have decided to look into african cichlids. I have a 90 gallon tank (48x18x24) that I am looking for stocking ideas. I definitely want a few calvus but don't know enough about africans to know what to put with them. I would prefer an all male tank so no spawning takes place and I've read that you need calmer tankmates for calvus. What are your suggestions? Remember that I am new to africans so please don't use shorthand when giving suggstions. Thanks in advance!

I would try some Neolamprologus brevis with them.

You will need to keep the pH near 9 and a KH of 220ppm. Keeping the nitrate levels down is also a must when keeping any compressiceps.

Oh ya, gets alot of shells for that tank!

I have a 200 gallon tank with 6 Goldfin Comps (like Calvus) and mixed with Venustus, Dolphins, Frontosas and Malawi Eyebiters. So far have no issues in the tank (tank is about 3-4 years)... any aggression is usually toward the same species... Good luck on your African tank!

FRONTOSA. They are my favorite cichlids, they get big, but your tank is fine for them. Maybe also some shell dwellers and other tanganyikas. Try to avoid mbuna and other malawis with them though
