Hi I am thinking about starting up a small 20g african cichlid aquarium I want to have an exact biotope, the fish I was interested in is the jewel goby cichlid, I was wondering what lake this fish comes from other fish from the same lake that can fit in a 20g, and also the kind of rocks found in their natural environment.

also is pool filter sand okay to use?

also with shell dwellers can I use a gaint shell my great uncle found in the ocean? if I clean it really well (it's over 100 years old)

i use pool filter sand its less dusty as play sand alhtoug play sand is whiter imo. I almost got shellies today except i have no space:( good choiceto go with them :)

I'd get smaller shells, even something like apple snail shells if it is for small species like multis

The Jewel Goby cichlid is from Tanganyika. They prefer higher pH 8.6-8.8. If you keep this cichlid make sure you rock the tank HEAVILY. I would be very concerned about keeping Gobys in a 20g because they can be super aggressive and they like to have room. I have 20 Kigoma Red Gobys in a 4ft 45 gallon. If I were doing a 20g I would do Julies or shellies.
