Hi

i am new to American cichlids, but quite familiar with African mbuna.

i am planning a 200 Liters tank dedicated to ameriacn cichlids. i want to raise firemouth and salvini. i'll start with 5 ~ 10 fry each and raise them till breeding age.

my questions are:

are they compatible with each other ?
is there better stocking ideas for a tank of that size ?

i personally wouldnt mix these two differnt types of fish. i think the salvini will harass the firemouth and grow quicker. but there is no rules with fish. you could get lucky and get peaceful fish??? best of luck with whatever you choose

Firemouth and Salvini are both central american cichlids, and they grow to be of similar size, so they are not incompatible. in my experience, the Salvini is more aggressive than the Firemouth, and that may be where most or your problems (if any) would come

a 200L tank (roughly a US 55G tank) would be suitable for no more than a pair of each, but I believe you could pull it off . . .

firemouths would probably get killed by a salvini pair. just to a species tank of either or

I've had a salvini and firemouth in a 55g before. It can work, but make sure you get a female salvini. Females sals aren't as aggresive as males. Just look for the blue bloch on the dorsal fin. I had a FM kill a female sal, but I think it was a rare thing. My FM is a complete psycho. It is usually the other way around. Also get some dithers like tertas, or swordtails.
