Hey everyone. I just bought a black arowana. Tank mates are only two bichirs same size. He swims around a little but spends most of his time in the corrner wraped around an output tube. Eating no problem. Comes out more when lights are off.

Is this typical behavor? Ive only had him for about 5 days now.

Tough to say. If its eating than thats a good thing. I dont know nothing about its tankmates. Give it some time to get use to the water and its new home.

Hi.. If there is a way to lower the lights intensity you could try that.. or switch off tank lights and leave a night lamp around(only at nights, this is prob if you get some sort of day light in the room with the tank).. could you please post pics of your setup..

Mine does the same thing I don't think it's anything to worry bout I had mine for 3 months same thing just more active at night

Could just be getting used to it's new surroundings. The fact that it is eating is good. A few other things you can do to help it feel more secure, add some floating plants this will give it more places to "hang out". Make sure you don't have any currents strong enough to overwhelm the aro. Don't wear bright colors around the tank, such as red, orange or yellow.

Also you may have already heard this, but arowana are extreme jumpers. Make sure you have every possible hole in your tank top sealed and secure. Really sucks to find an arowana laying dried up on the flood.

Hears pics....

Picture of the hiding spot and pic of full set up. Comments or insults welcome.

OK....I checked with everyone on the poly forums and they said would be fine as tank mates. No aggression so far.

I used a fx5. It has a high output flow. So i turned it down to about half thinking he was having trouble swimming. Same hiding behavior. And at night he will come out even when the flow is all the way up.

Do these guys really turn blue in adult size?

You should be able to go full flow with the FX5 just keep the flow pointed towards the bottom half of the tank. Try up rooting your plastic plants, this will make them float and you can see if there is any change in behavior without spending money on more plants.

The most blue you will see from that aro is now through about 18-20"

Below is a pic of my 22 month old 26" black aro
