best advice is all at the top of the arowana subforum in the stickies.
being new to arowana, you should keep only one aro in it's own growout tank. they are very fragile fish when small.
An Aro community is a hit or a miss.. a lot of times the results are disastrous as fish keepers try to keep aros in inadequate tanks.. and yes there are people here on mfk with a community in appropriate tanks(or Ponds).. brian(bderick69) check his fish room.. and search the forum.. you will see pics of a lot of them.. others like koji.. davidwy.. tlkmdn.. Not because i have a pond for my aros but from what i see these fish need their space and thrive better.. take your time and decide if you want to keep two or just go with one.. like crispy mentions have a thorough read at the stickies.. they take you through the stages of the aro and the specific care required at those times.. cheers.. all the best mate![]()
Never trust any LFS.. this is what i believe in.. I probably have very good breeder friends and know a lot of people from LFS.. though i listen to them.. some of the yarn they spin is too much.. So.. I'm glad you asked.. You could.. but bear in mind.. the aros could start fighting.. I've been through the same thing.. had two small 4" aros in the same tank.. the smallest of this duo trashed up the other slightly larger aro.. and i had to give them separate tanks.. so incase this happens.. do you have a spare tank? are you prepared to filter, clean,WC, monitor two tanks? I'm assuming your tank is 5'X1.5'X1.5' for calculations.. and that will be about 80 gallons when full.. That might be ok for an aro till it hits about 12".. for two aros maybe till they are about 10".. you've mentioned the aro is about 5".. and its pretty possible for young aros to put on like 1.5" a month.. so roughly in about 4 to 5 months you might need a larger tank.. and if you have two you'd need it even quicker.. do have a look at the sticky about tank size.. you will get a good idea about what you will need.. and for an aro tank width is also very important..a 3' to 3.5' width would be decent.. anyway back to your question.. think about it, if you can upgrade at such a short time.. if you cant dont think about two aros.. or even one.. i'm not trying to discourage you from keeping the fish but as much as you would like to provide.. realistically assess if you can in the long run.. cheers..
Thank you so much for such a helpful advice...i wont be adding another aro to my exisiting tank...one thing more id like to know is are there any home made recipes for aro's food ? i have tried alot and i am still trying to get hikari food sticks or any other fish food specially formulated for aros but i dont think so i will succeed..presently i am trying to feed hikari cichlid pellets to my aro but he rarely eats the complete pellet...he usually spits without even chewing it and the pellet continues to float..but i am still trying...secondly id like to know what occasional treats can we give to our aro ? Thanks in advance![]()
Good Call to just stick to one aro..Always welcome mate.. hikari pellets are good.. if you really look at the ingredients on the package of a hikari cichlid pellets and food sticks designed for aros and compare it.. the ingredients are mostly the same.. prob the ratio differs.. but they all provide enough nutrition.. there are other brands but i have been using hikari and i feel it is good.. aros trying to eat somethin and spitting it out is mostly a sign of them accepting it as food.. so continue with it and your aro should be eating it soon.. what do you feed your aro now, other than pellets? have you read the sticky? it gives you a list of what to feed at what sizes.. rather than me repeating it here.. just go thru the sticky.. occasional treats could be crickets.. no mammalian meat.. no chicken.. lamb , beef and all that.. avoid it.. i'm sure you've seen videos of aros being fed mice.. don't do that.. its not part of their natural food selection.. home made foods eh.. its a lot of work initially till you get it right.. sometimes they will mess up your tank completely so i try not to go that route.. but google and search on the forum i'm sure you will get recipes.. but i doubt there are specifically home made for aros.. put up some pics of your aro.. what is your tank setup.. filtration etc..
