ok so i have a baby senegal bichir at around 3 inches and my question is whats its growth rate?

and also im about to recieve a 17 inch ornate bichir and i would like to know whats the growth rate of that one too

please and thank you

please don't tell me your are going to put them in the same tank!! The senegal is gonna become food to the ornate in no time.
the growth rate of the sens are generally a good inch a month. For, the ornates, they are one of the fastest growing bichirs. they grow around 2 inches a month and sometimes more. Your onate will get to 24 inches in a right tank size. your sen is going to grow to around 10 inches to 14 inches depending on genes.

the ornate at 17" will probably have a growth of 1 inch for every 5-8 months depending on conditions or it might not grow anymore, 24" is the max size, in captivity its usually smaller and max size very rarely achieved, the bigger they are already the slower the growth.

That doesn't matter, the Ornate will rip the crap out of the Senegalus before long.

lol no where in my tough was the sen in my mind, was just commenting that 2" per month for a 17" ornati is impossible in my opinion. =)

Ornati are one of the more aggressive Polypterus i have kept, they keep nipping each other, im sure the sen will be a good meal if ever he mix them up.

you should invest in a grow-out tank, when the sen reaches 10-12 inch you can try to add in to the community.

Maybe, but it's the truth!

between adults its normal and not harsh, but lix.max14 may be referring to the young, as we generally dont know the age of who we are talking too, probably making the truth more elegant would be more appropriate hehehhe and still be the truth.

my senegal grew from 3 inches to about 6 in about 4 months but hasnt really grown much since. it all depends on what you feed it and how often. i feed mine tilapia and massivore pellets (when he was smaller and couldnt swalllow a massivore pellet he was downing normal sinking pellets like a greedy pig). my ornate grew really fast alongside my endlicheri. i bought them both at the same time about a year ago at 3 inches and theyre both over 13 inches now. ive never had any problems with aggression between any of my 8 bichirs but a 17 inch ornate will gobble up the baby sen and think nothing of it so make sure the sen gets a bit bigger. at 6 inches itll probably be ok because he'll be too much of a mouthful to actually swallow if hes a healthy round size. although my endli is known for eating 8 inch needle nose gar when he was barely over 9 inches himself haha
