Hi,
I still live at home for 1 more year till I finish college and wanted to start a tank that Ill probably upgrade when I move out in a year. For now ive made a deal with my parents to let me get a 30 gallon tank max. with that being said all my life ive had tanks Ive cared for but have always been small cichlids or neons or such things. I want to now grow away from that to bigger fish... By bigger i mean baseball size-ish. something in and around the area of what silver dollars are like... but i want to consider all my options. I dont want anything to aggressive and I still am new to big fish so nothing to hard.

Anybody have resources or suggestions they have or had along with a number or approx how many I could fit in a 30 gal tank for the time being... I would be happy with a number or the same fish or different. As far as tank layout I want it realistic looking with wood/rock and sand apposed to fake plants and colored rocks.

any help would be appreciated.

ps) I was refered to this site by a friend and after skimming through thte posts people here have huge 150-300 gal tanks I hope Im in the right place.

Welcome

Hi these are some of the things i can think of right now but most of these fish prefer a long 30G tank :D .....

Fire mouths there not to bad they sometimes get along with convicts but you could just have a firemouth tank or just a convict tank.
Unless you want to mix it up ummm there is africans they get to a ok size.
I guess at the moment i can't really think of much else for a 30G yer you might be able to get frontasa they are lovely fish but yer someone else will probly have good ideas :D.

But yer just so some research o also rams i think you might be able to fit 2 maybe 1-2 Dwarf gouramis by them selfs really alot out there i think these are just some ideas do some research and i am sure you will find more :D

P.S you did chose the right site MFK is a great friendly site best fish fourms i never find :D

get a male and female convict. You will have some fish that grow to to a size you desire and will even breed for you!

great beginner fish and then when you get monster fish you will have feeders!

Okay wicked. thanks a bunch guys. very helpfull I like the spikes on the convicts. very neat. Another thing I wanted to consider is I really like small shrimp. They would probably be a nice light snack for any of these fish correct?

Is it tight to buy 3 silver dollars?

do you think a tank with frontosa's and keyhole cichlids would work?
my research on both has proved that they are mild and not aggressive.
ffrom 2 different areas but both live in rocky/woodish type of waters.

frontosas need really big tanks 100gallon+ so no frontosa. im not sure but maybe a pair of keyholes might work, but id go with the convicts. no shrimp, fish that can fit them in there mouths love to eat them.

agreed no shrimp. My bro tried keeping a fiddler crab with cons and the picked its eyes out and then got the rest of his pretty quick

I'd go with a pair of cons. you can tell females, they have red bellies. males don't.

they are great beginner fish. they are hard to kill and they will breed, which is great learning experience.

firemouths are pretty cool, too. just a lott harder to determine sex.

convicts and firemouths max out around 5", making a couple of them perfect for a 30 gallon. you could probably add a rubberlipped plecostomas, too, he'll help keep algae down (they look pretty cool, too).
