hey everyone im new to this site and this is my first post, my collection of fish right now includes 2 black rhoms and seven frontosa cichlids these are the only fish i am interested in, but back to my question i was wondering if its common for black rhoms to die from parasites? both of mine are about 5 inches and i want to grow them as big as possible each one has its own 60 gallon tank and i feed them both one red wag platy a day i buy them for a buck fifty at petsmart because i hear feeders have a ton of parasites, should i try to switch to fish fillets? i really enjoy watching them eat live food but its starting to cost me some$$ any help would be greatly appreciated. - anthony

:welcome: post some pics, would love to see them

Large rhoms usually suffer from intestinal worms.. which slows down there growth.. so maybe some prazipro will benifit you.. you usually can get piranha to eat just about anything with a little bit of coaxing.. i feed my brandtii silversides, salmon fillet, market shrimp all dipped in a multivitamin before beeing fed. as well as the occasional cichlid : ).. ohh and welcome to mfk if you have any other questions feel free to ask.. also we just started a photo contest so if you have any pictures just post them up in the POTM category..

feeding live is not healthy for piranha, no matter what the species. if you had one die from parasites it was probably due to feeders. try to switch them over to frozen shrimp or really anything frozen.

thanks everyone i will start weening them off live foods when i run out of platys but this has been very helpful and i will be posting pics pretty soon i just need to borrow my sisters camera.
