Hi, I can't decide what to put in my tank, its between fresh and brackish, both will be 'predatory' stocked.

I'll post my brackish questions here, and try and make up my mind based on the responce. I've got FW tanks, and feel brackish might be the next step.

The tank is a juwel rio 180, 40"x16"x20" (LWH). Which makes 207 litres (when I remove the internal filter - I'm getting a tetratec 1200 -birthday money ftw).
I would like to know possible fish suggestions, one that don't need feeder fish (not only because im not 100% comfortable with it, but just found out its illegal in the uk!).
I would like a semi-active tank, the ideas I have so far are limited, only general fish, I would however like a Butis Butis in there (2 if possible). Some sort of toadfish, would be interesting, and possibly some sort of goby. Ofcourse any other suggestion would be very nice. I would like a sort of ambush predator theme if possible (though some activity would be nice - I know that sounds like a contradiction but is it possbile?)

General brackish questions now.
I would like to know how easy it is to set up and maintain a brackish tank, also how expensive (in Uk if possible eg. the amount of marine salt required, how long would it last me etc.). I'm just apprehensive about going to the next level. I plan to have sand mixed with crushed coral to keep the pH up (though I read the salt will help this).

Many thanks for your assistance and patience, I know I must sound a noob (though I am:P)

ps. I also posted this on another forum, so apologies if you read it twice.

My 75 gallon brackish tank. Tell me if you like it.

I especially like the violet goby and scat, but I'm afraid they will get too big for my tank.

Is that a "dragon goby" in the first picture? I wasnt aware that these were brackish???

They're brackish but they're sold as FW. From what I have read they do not live as long or stay as healthy in FW, however my husband had one in FW for 7 years, grew to about 15 inches before it died during a power outage.

Of course, I do not advocate keeping them in FW, and neither would my husband (he didn't know at the time), as they truely belong in brackish water, but they can apparently live for significant amounts of time in FW given the proper water quality, so I can see why many still aren't aware that they don't belong there.

I think many people have the same issue when first getting a dragon goby. I know I bought one from Petsmart (where I now work) with no clue or what Brackish even was. Now I've built an entire tank based soley around my dragon goby.

We kept losing our gobies at the petsmart because they were in FW. I gave this info to the manager and actually got them to set up a brackish tank in the back to properly house them.

(not only because im not 100% comfortable with it, but just found out its illegal in the uk!).

We really have become a pathetic little country. So now the pike are breaking the law by not playing nice with the minnows? What they gonna do slap 'em with an ASBO?

Dont take this the wrong way, I'm really not having a go at you, its this weird PC crap that's permeating everything.... The same idiots that ban fox hunting because its cruel send our children to war??? And they want them to fight a war without hurting anyones feelings????

We can make all the laws we want, but theres only one real law...that of the jungle. If you are not comfortable with predators eating live fish Keep fish that aren't predatory. Its only my opinion and I'm not suggesting we change the law and send people to jail, it should be a free world, but a predators life revolves around predating, theres little enough stimulation in the average aquarium for them as it is...I think its cruel NOT to feed them feeders! Sorry Rant over...Mr Angrys back in his box.

In theory now in the UK, with the new animal rights legislation, you could be JAILED for failing to carry out your weekly water changes!:screwy: Even going on holiday without someone PHYSICALLY CHECKING your fish daily constitutes neglect... up to 12 MONTHS INSIDE. I'm all for good husbandry, but getting MANLOVED for missing a WATERCHANGE seems a 'tad' harsh?

Pike top minnoiws do well in brackish, as do most archers, the pike top minnow though is a fish that you may find hard to feed. Knights gobies, mud skippers and spaghetti eels are all nice choices for an interesting brackish tank.
