Im going off to college next year and need to downgrade ALL of my aquariums into one, 40gal. Brackish is always something Ive been intrested in, but have never really gotten down to doing. Any recomendations on what could be done with a 40? Anyway I could get some of the "rarer" brackish fish to central wisconsin? (stuff not available on liveaquaria.com ect) Ive kept marine reefs, cichlids, large oddballs and the such. Have a lot of experience. Thanks for the help, Flesh :D

Read through the Brackish Setup sticky, and found it somewhat informative. I knew a lot of the information, but had already been doing some research/reading. Basically wondering if and what I can keep in a 40gal happily. I like the puffers, but not the little ones. Archerfish are cool, but I would prefer something a little more out of the ordinary.

Anyone have success moving saltwater fish into brackish? I think this might be interesting. Drip acclimating into a high salinity brackish environment, and then slowly lowering the salinity. Therefore making a true "estuary" environment. How bout a couple butis butis in a 40 with a colombian shark. Obviously the 40 wouldnt be a permanent solution for the colombian, but starting at 3-4" he could stay in there for a long time before outgrowing it. Any words of advice on these or other brackish fish would be appreciated.

bony marine fish are good down to about 1.012sg. i woldnt go lower than about 1.016sg for long term health.

someone here has a green chromis in 1.012. its apperntly fine too.

puffers are great. green spotted puffers get to about 6" you could do one in that tank. i had one. he was great i ended up moving him into full SW and he loved it. also never had any trouble with him chewing corals or even inverts. loads of personallity and was loved by everyone who came in to the room.

very personable, and very intelligent. GSP's are loads of fun. but tankmates should be expendable. mive was happy with archers, a snowflake eel (gymnothorax tile), chromides, and a clown fish. but i did lose the other chromide (had a pair), a few gobies i collected, a dianas hog fish, and a pacific dwarf angel. so be careful...

Thanks so much... glad to get help from SOMEONE! :D We will just have to see if anyone else chimes in on the other species. Have yet to fully decide what kind of tank I want to end up with anyways.

you could also try other gobies. bumblebee gobies (Brachygobius nunus), knight gobies (Stigmatogobius sadanundio), crazy fish/duck billed sleeper gobies (butis butis) ect.

also various rainbowfish, fresh water flounders, fresh water lionfish, mudskippers (cant believe i forgot about those). maybe even some red claw crabs.

I really like butis butis, and they are available through fosters and smith I believe (liveaquaria.com), actually its something that looks similar. Dont know the story behind this fish, but it is also called the crocodile fish (Luciocephalus aura) Who knows. I would also like to try a puffer, and maybe working a couple saltwater fish down to brackish, just as an experiment to see what I can do. A Radiata Lionfish would be happy in a 30-40gal (Pterois radiata). I dont know what kind of tankmates I would put in with him though. Generally speaking I would like to avoid a full-marine aquarium because being an owner of a reef system now, I appreciate the labor, time, and money that gets put in. Right now Im just hunting around all the forums for the coolest thing I can do with the space I have available. So everythign is still up in the air. :D
