I don’t know
I recently upgraded a 125- to a 180.
Now the 125 is on my heated porch, it stays cooler then the house but it is heated.
I want keep goldfish in the tank.
Really like Sarasa and Shubunkin and yellow comets.
What’s a safe stocking number? 4-6, 8-10?
Are there any fancy’s that will
do well with these guys?
My first fish was a black Moore and I would like to add. 1-2 is feasible.

Thank you

I’d go the fancy route personally.
But choosing one or the other would be best. In a small space like a tank single fin goldfish can startle easily and damage fancy goldfish.

The singles get big and should really only be in ponds. You could keep them in the tank for maybe a year. They just really benefit from more swimming space.

Fancies I think you could do maybe 4-6 depending on what ones you get. Black Moors in my experience are a bit smaller. Red caps get huge fast. Ryukins take a couple years but also get pretty big.

Thanks for your reply.
This tank will be my girlfriends, in an attempt to get her more involved and hopefully understand why we share our home with 17 or so aquariums.

I was surprised that she was more interested in single tails over the egg shaped types.

A local store has large fancies in somim hoping we take a drive and she falls in love with these goofballs.

How deep is the tank? Fancies do better in more shallow water. Anything deeper than around 20ish inches and they become more prone to swimbladder issues. I would stock 4. Definitely not more than six. Some of mine are tye size of grapefruits. The better you feed them and the cleaner you keep the water, the faster they grow!

Some other considerations to keep in mind: low flow filtration. They don't do well with high currents. If you feed them anything dry soak it first. Adults do better on a diet that is more plant based.

Great place to get detailed tricks of the trade is from quality GF breeders. Look up Bo Zhao and Zhao's Fancies. Even if you dont buy a fish from him you can still get great care info from someone who produces some amazing fish.

Thanks for the tips-
I knew about the flow and diet and ultimate size.

It’s a standard 125 72x18x21

The more I read/see the less appealing fancies become to me.

We shall see what shakes out with stores finally starting to stock for pond season

Comets and the like don’t mix with fancies. They’re way too fast and the fancy goldfish are way too slow and derpy. Comets also get considerably bigger. I’d put 4 or 5 fancy’s in that tank. They get thicc.
And this should go with out saying. But just so it’s been said...no koi. That’s a 1000+ gallon fish, pond or otherwise.

Thanks-

I know koi are too large and active for this tank or any that I own.

I think we are going to go with 4-6 shubbys, Wakins and comets.

We much prefer their shape and activity levels.

From what I’ve read Ryukin and fantails have the best chance with single tails.

Fancy’s are starting to look like balloon mollies to me and I don’t think I want them any longer
