Hey guys, im new to the hobby and currently have a 33gal Rekord 120 community tank. i have purchased a rio 240, 77gal i think. which i plan to do a chiclid tank. i have been looking at african species. but i need advice.. a few questions that i hope you guys could help with.

whats species of chiclids would you suggest for this tank, i would lik a few different types that are not too aggressive. i have seen eletric labs yellow and blue ones too. i plan to have a black sand subtrate and some nice holey rocks, also use coral sand in my filter to increase the PH. im a blank canvis. open to any ideas or advice.

There are Yellow Labs just not Blue ones. There are White and Albino Labs as well. If you like the Labs, Demasoni make good tankmates. Mine get along great. There are many different combinations you can go with. I have some Hongi in with them as well. The 3 varieties make a nice look to a tank.

Well I am new here, but I hate for your plea to go unanswered any longer. I have been involved in the hobby with African cichlids for over 30 yrs. Hope this helps. I got my start with a 55 gallon set-up at a time when the only common African cichlids were mbunas. They are mean spirited little devils for the most part and if you don't like mean, by all means stay away from these. Be especially wary of any with horizontal stripes.
I now keep a 75 gallon tank with a mixture of Malawi haplochromines and a couple of labidochromis (hongi and yellow lab). Labidochromis, I am told are the most mellow of the mbunas and seem to do well with the others. I also have a frontosa and a Hap moori. Rounding out the group are a coupel of synodontis cats and a demasoni (mbuna, also fairly well behaved I am told---new addition). Hope this helps!
