Hey guys,

Pretty new to fresh water although i kept some back in high school. I've been into reeftanks for the past few years and thought i'd give freshwater a try as well(i had a 40gal laying around) the red jewel caught my eye at the fishstore and so i was thinking of having a couple of those and maybe some german rams and this other cichlid(can't remember the name...but it was light blue and supposedly stays small)

So here's the deal...i picked up a aquaclear 110 hang-on today as well as some gravel. But as i've been looking and reading some threads it looks like many of you use sand. i had sand left over from some of my salt tanks and so i've rinsed it out.

questions: which substrate should i use? Also, the undergravel jets were a little intriguing and was wondering if i can use that w/sand or coarse gravel only? What else am i going to need for the aquascaping? Where do i get the large rocks or drift wood, if needed?

thanks in advance.

sand or gravel its really what you think looks better.
You can find rocks outside thats where I get mine or at a landscape store or home depot. If you have relativly unpolluted waterways near you you can collect your own driftwood,or buy it from drsfosterandsmith.com
I wouldnt put red jewels with rams the jewels are a much more belligerent fish.
