Nice. What is it? and how big do they get? I am trying to figure out what african cichlids i can put in my 20 long.

its a Blue Johanni and I just saw them at the store. they grow up to 4-5 inches and supposedly live up to 10 years. from lake malawi too

if i do add more, i need a couple females, correct? i have heard that they will stress out the female unless there are multiple females for each male

They do well in a colony either 1 male to 3-5 females or 2 male to 6-10 females or you could get all males I suppose... you will need at least a 45 gal for that many though... you could also mix them with other types I had one male in my community tank for a year and a half he got along with the others and seemed fine but I always wanted to get more of his type and couldn't find any so I gave him away...

Btw are you sure that is a johanni not a maingano? It looks Maingano to me but it could just we the pic...

i'm pretty positive he is a johanni mainly for this reason : the females in the tank he came from. They fit the description of johanni. yellow/orange/gold color. maingano would look like the males. thats the only thing that truly makes me believe it is johanni.

what i am concerned about most with this guy is when i brought him home, i tested the ph of his new tank, and i also tested the ph of the water he came from. the lfs ph was 6.0! i checked mine and it was about 7.2 and comes out 7.6 at the tap. i'm affraid he is going through shock from ph change

Right now he is fine but a 10gal will be too small for him plus they need the company of their own kind and others to sustain a normalcy type of life.. These guys are really aggressive.. good luck with them..

what about a 20 long with 1 male and 2-3 females?

Probably not going to keep aggression down with only 3 cichlids in a tank though I would worry about that with these guys I would say at least keep an eye on the agression it can depend on the male specimen some are more agressive than others...
