Hey, just looking for some advice.
I have a 3 by 2 by 2 oddball set up. My partner has a 5 by 2 by 2 specimen tank. We have just been offered a 6 by 2 by 2, which we are going to take in place of his tank. The thing is this tank already has fish in it. A discus being one of them. We have already found homes for the rest of the fish but I quite fancied giving the discus a home in my tank. The larger tank is definately a no goer for the discus coz it has oscars, large cats, 4 large severums and pike cichlids.

I have 4 full grown angels,a 8" black ghost, a 5" senegal bichir, a large family of kribs, a 7" fire eel, a bush fish, 2 rainbow cichlids, 2 keyhole cichlids, 3 corys, a 5" pangassi, 2 striped barbs and a fire belly newt. They all get along great!! No squabbles.

I have a well planted tank, with several knotted peices of bogwood. So the water is slightly tanned. There is quite a large open area and the substrate is a fine gravel.

How well would a 6" discus do? Anything I could do to make my tank more habitable?

Discus are not fish that like to be kept alone they are schooling fish similar to neons, your discus will do better with some tank mates of his/her own kind minimum 4 but 6 would be better. Also discus do require different water conditions to other fish and are not aggressive feeders and might not get enough at feeding time with the other fish you have in the tank. I would suggest doing some research on discus before making you decision. It might be kinder to rehome this fish with someone that has discus if you do not want to get any others to keep him company. IMHO

Thanks. I have done a little research but there is nothing better than personal experience.
I have taken it for the meantime and it seems happy to school with my angels but I have someone who would take it if need be. As for getting other discus. I would but only if my tank was big enough

hey just a quick update. kept the discus and got another one. however they don't shoal. in fact they don't really want to have much to do with each other. my turq blue is still with the angels. My newer one, a turq red, spends more time with a rehabilitating Oscar. They both seem happy enough and are feeding well. However once the Oscar is strong enough, it will be going into a bigger tank. Should i get another one? Do I need to?

If you have the room then get another Discus or 2 as the ideal number of discus to have is 5-6. Glad to hear they are doing well. Do you have any pictures.

I am gonna get another one as the larger oscar has been moved back over and now my wee red is looking lonely. It's quite funny though because he's trying to school with my 2" baby oscars but ever time he approaches them, they shoot of to the other side of the tank.

I will post some pics shortly. I need my red discus ID'd as I don't think he is wot he was sold as. Supposed to be a red turq but his coloring and patterns are completely different from my blue turq. Think he may be a pigeon blood!
