I have had 3 of them for the past few months. I have been reading and re-reading about all the different types.. I still cant figure it out. It makes my head hurt.

Also male or female?

Thanks for all the great info..
Photo sucks.. I used my BB..

Def a ZZ...maybe a female, moreso than a male.

It's a male zhen zhou red dragon. Thats about all you see around in Michigan. If you want something different talk to me or honda237.

what did you base on?

you said mine was a male zz as well from this thread

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359388

but mine has a quite different head shape than the OP's with a better kok potential. i'm still learning about how to sex the zz's. do you look for black markings on dorsal fin? what are you looking at in general? thanks in advance.

(btw, mine has developed a more prominent kok now after two weeks. will post update pics soon.)

With zz's like this females almost always (90%) have the spot in their dorsal fins. The shape of this fish also looks male to me but I'm not 100% because I didn't see the vent.

You can't sex them by the kok it is more of a genetic thing. I can show you a lot of females with heads bigger than males only because they have better genetics.

Hmm, tough call as far as gender identifying here. I might have to go forward with Cam here that the Red ZZ may very well be a male. But yet again, I will not confirm it either. Still a nice fish...keep us updated and I will assure you that we'll be able to confirm it in the future once it develops more.
