Hey guys, I picked up 2 GSP this afternoon for free from someone who was getting rid of their tank. I had a 55 gallon that was empty and had just finished cycling so that's their new home. Been reading a lot about them but had a question about salt. This person was using API aq. salt and not real marine salt. So should I treat them as bring used to freshwater and slowly convert them over to high end brackish? They are about 2.5 inches right now and I want to give them a good home. Thanks everyone.

^ Yup, treat them as if they've been kept in fresh and slowly add marine salt...

Actually, i should have been slightly more clear and say raise the salinity slowly over a period of time...

I think the rule of thumb is around 1.002 a week till you reach your desired salinity level...

Although someone correct me if im wrong since i dont keep saltwater fish :)

Exactly right. .002 per week correct. If you want to do semi-weekly water changes you could go .001 each wc which would be .002 per week but instead of having larger steps it's a steady and even incline.

Ok, sounds good - will plan on raising .002 per week. A 55 should be good for the 2 of them with no other tank mates and plenty of hiding spots, that sound right?

And I've read to give them crunchy food (snails, shrimp, etc) to help keep teeth worn down so they don't grow too long.

2 in a 55 would be fine as long as it has enough plants (real or fake) to break up their line of sight.

Yes crunchy food is required. Walmart always has a surplus of snails growing and breeding in their tanks. My local Walmart would always scrape them off the sides and give them to me. You could also start a marbled self cloning cray breeding operation as a source of crunchy food.

Thanks for the help, I do have some small snails that magically appeared in one of my tanks so I'm going to use them as well. Think they probably came in on some plants I got. But I'll definitely check for some free snails at various stores.

Don't forget to use aragonite sand substrate.
