So im trying to create a planted tank with my 55 gallon. The reason why is because i have Greater Sirens and they like to live in vegetation. What substrate should I use and what lights should i get?
Also wanted to know what kind of plants i should get as well?

Use a High Output T5 4 bulb light. Or a HOT5 light
R/O Water ONLY (This actually will make a difference)
Flourite Black Substrate
Flourish Excel (Additive)
Flourish (Additive)
Try to get a CO2 Injection system. They do help
Use the rite color bulbs in your HOT5 light. Tropical lighting And Sun wave Lighting
:
You can plant anything you want in this type of setup. Be sure plants are something you want to do for sure before you decide to buy these things. They are pretty expensive. Also find out as much info as you can on planted Aquaria.

I disagree with ALL this....If a "TRUE" planted tank is what he was going for then he wouldn't be throwing in the Greater Sirens. So what you do is BUILD around your Fauna. Dwarf Sag & Italian Vals need neither co2 or HO lighting. If you want a simple habitat for your Greater Sirens stick to simplicity. Over time with the lighting I suggested and dosing either PMDD or LIquid your tank will be full of sag and vals

I also disagree with this. 4 T5 HO lights would be way too bright for a low tech tank. Hell it would probably be too bright for a tank with Co2 injection. All that extra light is asking for an algal bloom. Stick to 1-2 T5 lights at 10-12 hours a day and sturdy low maintanance plants like anubias, Sag, Vals, crypts and moss. Dose using flourish and flourish excel as recommended on the bottles. Do your regular water changes and your tank will be gorgeous and healthy.
