I recently bought a 55 gallon tank for cheap out of the newes paper. I am cleaning it and getting ready to start some fish in it. I am new to this site and I was hoping you guys would have some ideas. I am looking for an agressive fish that has personality. I am pretty sure I only want one show fish that could live in this tank for life. That or possibly some group of piranhas. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

I forgot to mention my tank is about 4 feed long by 2 feet high and 1 foot wide. Also a kid down the hall in my apartment said he is willing to sell me his "p3" filter for 50$. I tried to google it, but i kept getting different things, is this a good deal?

Never heard of a p3 filter so unless you can come up with a brand name and have someone knowledgable say yes or no leave it alone for now.

RBP's you could do up to 4 in there but they're only aggressive at feeding time. Most when you come over to the tank or look at them will scatter like mice.. Not saying they're not good fish to keep but they're overhyped as being super aggressive.

One aggressive show fish you could go with a larger cichlid.

I recommend taking a look at all your options and see what other people are keeping to get an idea of what you want before buying. One fish in a 55g unless you're really devoted to that species can get boring. And some prefer a community tank with lots of action. Just something to think about.

Oh and welcome.

Don't get a RBP. There all hype and pretty boring IMO. A green terror would be cool alone in a 55. 55 is pretty good size for african cichlids to but Like cichlaguapote said, look around and see what you like before making any decisions.

Welcome to MFK.:)

okay I just went to the his room and its a rena star xp3 canister thing. I think he said its a year old. I am thinking i might get it. Oh yea and would a fahaka be a bad idea in this tank?

The "p3" filter is probably an Rena Filstar XP3 canister filter. Great filter (I have 3 of them) and definitely worth $50 if it's not too old and in good condition. It would work well on the 55 gallon.
As far as fish go, I'd avoid piranhas in that tank. They can be pretty skittish and a 55 is too small for a group of red bellies or a rhom. It would work for one of the rarer serra types if you wanted to try that.
There are quite a few different cichlids that would work in that tank. Green Terrors, Jack Dempsey, Convicts, Firemouths, Salvini, Severums, africans (if you want a group).
Good luck!

You could house a fahaka for a while, but you'd have to upgrade since they get quite large (14"+) Most people recommend a 125 gallon for a fahaka.

the electric blue jack de's are a very attractive meany head fish. also your red terrors, if you are looking for cichilds. Or arrowannas are nice fish but a 55 wont be large enough for a full grown species. archers... Puffers. gars, cudas. there are alot of attack fish you could put ina 55. just boils down to what you are really looking for. but theres some idears, at least from my neck of the woods. hope you get it figured out, and let us see what you come up with when you get it done!
