Hows everyone doing, so i recently got myself a baby jack, im not new to fish, but new to cichlids. he or she, is in a 10 gallon at the moment, and currently about a inch long. I am in the process of setting up a new tank, and keep getting different answers on what size to buy, this is the only fish i plan to have in the tank, and am fine with that. I have had people tell me anything from a 20 gallon to a 75 gallon tank for this one fish, or to go by the 1 inch of fish per gallon, i was looking at the 30 gallon tanks but want a correct answer. Also any other information would be much appreciated, i am eager to learn more about these fish and am constantly doing research to better my knowledge. So just wanted to say hi to everyone and collect any information i can. Thanks everyone!

Nice pick up dude..well just make sure you prepare a dedicated house in tank for him. this guy is territorial fish. keep him in 26C-30C to control his aggressiveness. its always recommended not to keep more than 1 JD in 1 tank. he will assume other fish which are looks similar to him as a threat and enemies.

The size of the tank depends on fish size. Most of males get from 8 to 10 inches while females get from 6 to 8 inches; both sometimes get bigger. In the first year, males normaly gets 6 or 7 inches and females 5 or 6 inches. In my personnal opinion fish up to 6 inches can do well in a 30 gallons. Fully grown males should be housed in 55 gallons or more (maybe a 40 breeder).

I think he would do fine in a 40b or a 55g. But the way i look at it if your spending the money anyway for a new tank i would just throw in some more cash and get a 75g. Who knows in the future what you will want. I told myself a 55g was enough and i wanted bigger in a month for different fish.

+1 Pick up a nice used 75. the extra width is great. If you want to you could even breed him or her in the 75 when it gets bigger.

Thanks guys, I eventually plan on getting around a 75g when I move out in a year or so so for the time being I'll get him something else, my lfs of full of morons telling me to put him in a 25 gallon. I'm thinking about doing a 37 till I move out.
