Hey Guys,

Monsterfishkeepers seems the place to be if you have any questions regarding some hardcore aquatic carnivores, sooooo. I've been in the hobby for probably 10 years now, and have decided that I would like to set up a relatively medium sized aquarium (30-55 gallon) for a single juvenile lungfish with intentions of increasing the size of the aquarium as needed. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a first time lungfish owner. Im most interested in where I might be able to obtain my lungfish (i.e which online establishments are the most reliable). I also would be interested in knowing which species would be recommended for a newbie owner. Finally, I was wondering, though I know that lungfish are desensitized to water quality, if the aquarium should be cycled before the addition of my lungfish, or if the specimen would be able to endure the ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite fluctuations unscathed. Thanks in advance, guys. =)

-Zachary.

All lungfish are very hardy fish, any species will be good to anyone who want to keep them. Except that some are very expensive or hard to find. Commonly seen are the West African lungfish.

Please read the stickies.

Thanks guys. I read the sticky threads, and they were very helpful. Still wondering where I could order a lungfish online. =)

While they would definitely withstand the cycling process better than some more sensitive fish, I see no reason to put any fish through that. I would recommend cycling before introducing the lung.

I just got my first lung (South American) about 3 months ago and he is one of my favorite fish I've ever kept. He's still very small (~5", was ~2" when I got him) and is great with his tankmates in the 29 gallon he's currently in-we'll see what happens as he matures. I have heard SALs generally do better with tankmates than the African species, so that is one thing to consider if you'd like to keep it with other fish. I've never looked into buying lungfish online, so I can't really help you there

lung fish may be hardy but undesirable water conditions will damage their eyes and tender skin...prevention better than cure...:nilly:

most common will be annentens, price also ok, so can start with them.

Id go with what you can get your hands on or what you like the looks of better. The care is about the same for all lungs. Really the biggest thing is if you want the lung to have tankmates or not. If so get a SA Lungfish rather than an African species cuz Africans have a nasty side.

As for where to get one Id say check out aquabid.com. They have customer feedback on the site so you'll get to see what others thought!

Oh cycle the tank too as for reasons above!
