im starting to clear everything out for a 10gallon reef tank. im planning to let fresh water sit in the tank for about a couple weeks for it to cycle. if i get two live rocks. can i let it sit in the tank full of freshwater so the bacteria can grow on there? or do i need to get saltwater and start the cycle from there? thanks in advance

live rock must be in saltwater, otherwise you just waisted your money. I suggest trying to get a larger tank. 10 gallons is not a lot of water to work with and you'll probably want more room for error. just my .02 though.

sorry but that was funny try 30 gals thats a little easyer to keep control of and yes you need the salt a fast change from fresh to salt or salt to fresh will kill anything includding the bacteria

Like the others have said, if you can start with a larger tank, then easier to kept the water param stable. However, i'm sure a 10 gal nano can be done effectively, as long as you stay on top of the maintainence, especially if you are thinking about keeping coral.

As for cycling, yes you can use live rock, but it has to be in salt water. If you are doing a reef tank then, you may want to get more live rock, as that will serve as your primary bio-filtration. If it is fish only, then you have a little more latitude, but not much more.
