Very interesting.. I think i want to get a female too :)

THough i am also bery interested in the "common name" Medusa Plec. :D

yes, ancistrus ranunculus are nice plecs too. remember some ancistrus sp. females have bristles only on the "lip", and the males have them all over the face, so be careful sexing them just using bristles. how big is it?

3.5 inches.. I mis read then.. Cause there were a bunch with Bristles like this and then there were a bunch same size with just nubs and not really any bristales... tell me more.. :)

generally with sexing ancistrus, it is based on males having the tentacles/bristles whatever you want to call them and the females dont. however in some species, females also get bristles, but just around the edge of the head, the lip. however some of the time adult females look like smaller males. here are some examples. there is a male ancistrus claro, and a female, as you can see both have the bristles. theres also ancistrus ranunculus (the medusa) female (left) and male (right) and they both have bristles, but female to lesser extent. this is shown in nemerous species, and then some the females do lack bristles entirely. if you want to get into breeding it is best to buy the plecs at the same time, as there are so many species of ancistrus that look very similar, and therefore you are more likely to get the same species. also look at different plecs at the same size, and it should be apparent which are males and females. happy hunting

Well now that this fish is around 3-4" I am starting to believe it is SHE :) I was at the LFS I purchased from and the males there now ARE very obvious :) Bristles all over their faces.. This fish in my tnak aroudn the same size has them aroudn the lip and Right up the middle to the forehead.. SO still a little iffy.. AS i have no experience but I am going to buy a for sho MAle today maybe ....

Howdy,

Nice Ancistrus  However, get that poor plant out of your tank. It'll die under water anyways, and it will live much longer and healthier on your windowsill ;)
