I recently obtained a 55 gallon from a friend of mine. This tank was his main tank for about six years then he upgraded and left the 55 gallon on his back patio in the shade for almost a year. I was wondering how long I should leak test it. I've hearing and reading different opinions. Some say you should partially fill the tank a quarter a day for a span of four days. Some say 24 hours or 48 hours. How long should you leak test? My friend said he guarantees it won't leak. Is 24hrs with no leaks good enough to setup? The sealant feels normal and not dry and thin like old sealant.
Sorry if that was a mess of a paragraph.

6 years is pushing the age limit on a tank thats been sitting for any amount of time. I had one that had been in storage for a year after 6 years of use, so 7 years total. and that sprung a leak on me after using it for maybe 3 years.

put it in a dry place, place it on top of newspaper, fill to the top and wait a few days. If you notice any of the newspaper getting wet then you not only know it has a leak but generally where its coming from.

Thanks, I clicked the end button before I could go back and edit myself.

I only plan on using this tank for a year or less. But that would suck.

Too late. It's already sitting without newspaper.
