Feeder Fish

Hi! I would just like to know what to feed my fish. I just got a Texas Cichlid and Green Terror a couple of days ago, both about and inch or two long. The guy I bought it from said I can feed it pellets or blood worms. It won't eat the pellets so I tried putting in some guppys. Both ate two but haven't eaten another guppy since then.

I'm worried that they might die due to starvation. I've been keeping Tiger Oscars, Snakehead and other Cichlids for about a year now. This is the only time I've encountered this problem. Hoping for immediate feedback from anyone

I agree with the above, or they'er still full from the two guppys they ate. I would start them on NLS Thera +A 1mm pellets, if that isn't available in your area Hakari Bio-Gold + is another good choice. Avoid using feeders unless you're breeding and raising them yourself and even then would only feed them as an occasional treat. Things like Blood worms, earth worms, brine shrimp ect are all excelent treats but their diet should be based around a high quality pellet as suggested. Initally if they are refusing the pellets try feeding pellets exclusivly for several weeks. They will not starve and will eventually start eating them, somtimes you just have to wate them out but they'll come around. Be persistant and don't give into the temptation to feed them somthing else, remember it's a battle of wills and you have the upper hand. Good luck they should be fine.

Welcome to MFK.

If they are that small, and they won't take pellets... try some flakes.

I'm currently growing out a Texas and a Jaguar cichlid for my 180, both are about 1" as well. They are both eating Omega flake as staple (working on pellet, they were on flake at LFS and thats what they like still). I'm also dropping in small bits of thawed shrimp or thawed beefheart every couple days (which they love).

Like everyone above said.. they are probably just stressed from the move and will settle in.

NLS 1mm pellets wil be easly handeled by fish that size. I've use it on all my small fish with no problem. I'm currently using it on Corys, Tiger Barbs, Rams, Latacara Dorsiegra and a small group of 1.5-2" Festivum. If you can't find the small Hakari Bio-Gold+ you could crush them and feed the pices, Hakari Micro pellets can be used as an allturnative but they are very small. Omega One also makes small marine pellets with garlic, I have used them too in the past with good resilts.

Hakari makes baby pellets and mini pellets for smaller fish. Also small, medium, large sizes too. I use all of them and my fish love it. I have some 1-2" Convects / Salvinni who eat the Baby pellets right now. They do make micro pellets as well, but they are too small.

When I take a fish from one tank to another sometimes they will not eat for days... as stated above you will just need to wait them out. Good Luck.
