Hi All
I'm new here, duh!
Looking to learn much about fish, tanks, filtration systems and snails. My experience with fish started when a neighbor was moving and didn't want to shock her fish with the move so she gave them to the wife and I. It was two Beta fish in those poor little 6"x6"x6" containers. So we went out and bought a ten gallon tank and separator so they could share the tank and not fight each other. That was fine and Lucky (red) and Love (blue) did well for a few months the Love got sick. Tried antibiotics but he ended up dying. Next stage was to add some Neons and removed the separator. Month later added some Rasbora. Everything was doing really good so I added 2 algae eaters and a plant over the next few months. The algae eaters died 2 months later so I replaced them with 1 that I thought was the same, it wasn't and it started to go after the Neons. In stepped Lucky to protect them. One month later the Neons were gone. Shortly after that I noticed Lucky attacking the Algae eater and it was gone over night. So I'm left with 1 Beta and 5 Rasbora. When I introduced the the plant I all of a sudden had an infestation of snails. Lucky likes to snack on them from time to time after the first two months so I'm leaving them for now unless someone tells me I should remove them because of any problems they might cause.
So this is where I sit right now and I am considering building my own bio filter system and looking for advice as to what I need and what I should get. I now turn the floor over to the members.

Welcome to MFK Greg! If your looking into a bio filter, I would suggest picking up a small sponge filter ran by an air pump. Perfect for a tank that size and will increase O2 levels in the tank at the same time. You can always take the hang on back (HOB) filter approach as well. An AC30 or similar would be a welcome addition to the tank I'm sure. Have a look over in the setup/filtration section for a some ideas. C ya around!

Thanks for the info, I will look into them. I've tried the lettuce trick, but only controls a small amount.
