An island somewhere......
I just purchased my first two 3" Midas's and these are my first. How many Midas's can you keep in a tank? I'm assuming until the aggression kicks in or when they're old enough to breed? These were kept in a tank with about 4 others (3"-5") previously. Secondly, what other cichlids can you keep with them? Oscars?

well it depends.. what size tanka re you going to put them in? A 75 gallon is proper housing for a single Red devil or midas, i would say a 100 for 2 is they are pasize you could maybe keep a male and a female. If there are two males i would say they will fight.... They need weekley water changes, good filtration and hiding spots when they are young.

A 75gal is the absolute minimum for an adult RD or Midas. I'd say the minimum tank size for a breeding pair would be a 125gal, and you'd need a HUGE tank to keep two males together successfully.

What size is the tank they're in now? You may find that it isn't long before they start fighting, and one may kill off the other one depending on tank size and if you have two of the same sex.

a 75 isnt bare minumum for a RD or Midas.... a 55 is... 75 is for if you want a chance to keep other fish with them or if you dont mind spending the extra money. 55 is for a single specimen

just my opinion

As of now they are sharing a divided 125 gallon tank. I was thinking about putting them each in their own 60 gallons till they get some size.

two males should NEVER be housed together. a breeding pair would be awesome in a 125. And dont put them in a 60g. Try to get them vented,(sexed), then put a male with 4 females in the 125g alone. once a pair forms, remove all the others, because the RD pair will take up the entire tank.

Or, if you kept one RD in the 125, there are some cichlids you could keep in with it... but they have to be TOUGH! RD's will kill anything that isnt. In a 125 with an RD, a couple of good cichlids would be a vieja zonatum (be sure to get a real zonatum), and a salvini.

....you could potentially keep a FEMALE RD in a 55gal, though personally I don't think i would. But yes, a 75gal should be the minimum for an adult male.

We're talking Midas, I wouldn't put a pure midas or midas/rd mutt in less than a 18" wide tank as they can and do get over 12".

get used to one awesome wet pet. or a dividable pair.
gonna need a huge volume for other big tankmates.

and a 12" wide 55g for a midas male would seem cruel imo.
