Hi I was a active member here a while back but forgot my log in information. I am getting back into the fish keeping hobby after being absent for a few years.

My current set up is a 220, ehiem canister and a aqua clear 110 I got on Craigslist. My current stock is 2 bass about 4 inches each, 3 perch about 2 inches and 3 crappies about 2 inches.

My question is how long will a 220 be good for until I have to go bigger?

Its hard to say how long exactly, but that is a fairly large tank and some fairly small fish. The bass and perch will grow quickly. I would say the 220 is probably good for life with the perch and crappie. The bass may outgrow it, but I would say you have a few years at least before that happens.

If you were to substitute a pumpkinseed for the two bass, you would probably be good til the fish die of old age.

Bass will be fine for a while, excatly how long I can't say, the 30" monsters you hear about are usually in the wild. Biggest bass Ive seen in captivity was about 20", Ive heard of them hitting 24" but that was just hearsay. Once they hit 16"-20" most of their growth is bulk, not length. With two large bass and your other fish aggression may be a issue, and that is going to be a heavy bioload, especially with the filtration your running. I would look into a sump, or at least a larger canister such as a FX5. In they end though I have a feeling your going to have two large bass.
