hi guys im fairly new here and completly new to peacock bass.
I know they get big and im starting with a 125 gallon so heres my ? i never see just 1 in a tank . do you have to have five for them to thrive or can i start with just one?

thanks

Welcome and to answer your question Yes you can keep just one in a tank just fine. The reason you see more then one in a tank(s) is because they are very different and many species to choose from. If you decide to get one trust me you will want more.

Not to hijack your thread but I was about to ask the same question here. I'm wondering how many you can put into a 125g or should we just be talking about a 220g?:naughty:

Anything under a 240g should be temporary. I would not keep more then 3 in a 240g for life. You gotta keep in mind that when these fish max out they will be 20''-24'' if you stick with the smaller species of cichla. The larger species have the potential to hit 28''-34'' giving the right tank and husbandry. I would not recommend keeping a large group in a 125g and this is just a grow out tank for them I would say 4 would be a safe number. Idealy you want to have a 300g or more to have a good group that will thrive with all the extra room. These fish eat a lot and will need to have excellent filtration and large water changes weekly. When young they will grow about an inch a month and slow down considerably when they hit the 15'' mark.

There is a low percentage of people that keep chicla's for life. Usually they are sold, given away etc. before they ever get to the 20+" mark. If you want to try cichla, the 125 is fine for baby pbass. If you find within time that you want to raise them for years (life), then you will need to upgrade to a bigger tank.

I think too many people look to keep fish for life, but it's rare that they ever do

are occellaris one of the larger types and how is there tempermant towards other tankmates?you didnt hijack my thread you just borrowed it:D

No Ocellaris are one of the smaller growing sp maxing at 24''. If you can call that small. If they can be housed with other Cichlids you want to be sure that the other Cichlids are large enough to not be eatin. Every fish will have a different temperment. When Cichla are young you really don't want to house them with larger aggressive Cichlids. When they reach 12'' mark you want to be sure that anything added after this point is not to small as they will become food. Keep in mind these are the APEX predetors and will eat anything that they can fit in there mouth. There not really fighters so to say. The lip lock a little with eachother and will defend themselves when aggressed but there not bullies toward other Cichlids. The will establish a pecking order among themselves and show aggressive behaviour during spawning but for the most part there only thought is food! The aggressive Cichla are Orino's and the large growing Tem/Pinima/Azul. Orinos being within the smaller growing group but they tend to have BIG attitude.

I agree completely if your a lifer then you will have already invested in a large enough tank for life. With more experience you will learn and see there individule needs and what will make the fish happy short term and long term. Get an excellent heater and keep the 88+ degree mark steady, have excellent filtration with plenty of aireation and you will enjoy keeping these monsters. Enjoy them because the grow fast. There aren't very many that obtain max size in the home aquarium but it can be done. I would say in a 125 you may get max 2yrs of Cichla keeping and then you will know at that time in what direction you would like to go. Good Luck and welcome to the Cichness know as Cichla.
