Get Crenicichla regani :dwarf pike

Dwarf pikes are a great fish to keep. Also regani are reasonably peaceful. Plus they breed ok

how about the cobra? i want an aggressive fish. just dont want another escape artist.

no dude, you would want to stay away from any pike in the lugubris family, ie, xingu 1, cobra, marmorata if you only have a 40 gallon. Go with dwarfs where you can atleast keep a pair. :)

how big do dwarfs get? and how big do the lugubris ones get? could i keep a single cobra in a 40?

Dwarfs vary in size. Max size for a dwarf would be around 6 inches or so. Check the Crenicichla link in this forum for more information. Don't worry, smaller pikes will give you the same excitment with the pillage and divorce killing as the larger species. Like Benfica 540 said you will need a much larger tank for the species you mentioned.

If your tank is a 40 breeder, a pair of sp. Pacaya may work. But they'll have to be a bonded pair. Otherwise, what you're looking at is unfair treatment to the fish, demise of the fish and money out the window. JMHO

Lugubris get over a foot, I believe. They are way to big for a 40g, I believe a 75g is the minimum for a lugubris pike. Anyways, Peanut should answer to this threat sooner or later.

You guys have done pretty good already...lol...pretty soon I won't even have to answer...haha. Lugubris, Reticulatus, and Acutirostris group pikes are pretty much out bro. They all easily get 12"...some quite a bit larger. It would just be sad to see one cramped into anything smaller than a 75...and even then it would be best if it was a solo fish. Saxatilis and Wallaci (dwarfs..hehe...) are you best bet. They do have a lotta spunk and are willin to give you a show. They might be bashful at first but give them a few days and they will be the boldest fish in your tank. Garunteed. Few options, as stated, Crenicichla regani, Crenicichla compressiceps, Crenicichla notonatus (bah..sp...), Crenicichla alta, Crenicichla sveni, Crenicichla lepodita. For the last three pikes, you will need to either keep them solo, or keep them in a pair...ALONE..in the tank. For the dwarfs, you can set up a community.

does anyone know where i can get a crenicichla sveni in so. california?!?!?
