i have never kept piranhas before and i wanted to start.i have a 55 g and i was wondering how many red bellys i could keep. i also wondering what all i need to know first like what to feed, water temps.

i would say 3 in there. you may need to upgrade in the future. feed them bloodworms...shrimp fish fillets. water temp79-82.

55s aren't really good for natts if you plan on keeping them in there for life... some people will say that you can keep three in there, but even three will be cramped when they become adult size.

if you plan on upgrading in the future and you end up getting some, you should provide lots of cover, keep the temp around 80f, and feed a diet of good quality flake food, frozen krill, and bloodworms when they are around the 1-2" range and then move them to a diet of high quality pellets, raw shrimp and catfish, and frozen krill and silversides as they get bigger.

you also want to have alot of filtration on your tank, for a 55, a couple ac110s would work out pretty well, just make sure that you get a test kit to monitor your water params and keep up with weekly water changes.

ok thanks.yeah i plan on upgrading in the future lol im just trying to learn as much as i can before i get them.
good to hear... as long as you plan on upgrading in the near future, i would buy fish according to the stocking level you want in the bigger tank

check out opefe.com for piranha information... if you do your research there and ask questions when you have them, you'll know your stuff in no time.

you could start with 3 babies in that 55 of yours...they'll grow sooner than you think. upgrading would entail less bioload problems and ensure faster growth(and growth potential). as joe said, check out p-fury, almost all you need to know is there, and discussions are species-specific.
