hello i just recently set up my 55 gallon tank and bought six piranhas. the girl at the store was not very knowledgeable about what kind they were. or basically any information on them. all i know is that they are not the red bellies. if anyone knows of other types of piranhas that are purchasable please inform me. i was just wondering what the difference was and any type of characteristics they have different than the red bellys. they are all about an inch long right now and growing fast. if i could get any tips from anyone it would be much appreciated. once i get my camera hooked up ill post pictures up here for ya. thanks

how much did u pay??? 95 times out of a 100 there RBP. there the most common! jsut to let ya know ur gonna need a bigger tank!

post some pictures of your fish and we can ID them for you. if they are really piranahs then most likely they are red bellies...or could be pacus...(hope not)

unless you got lucky and score some baby caribes or pirayas but highly unlikely.

check out the sticky and you'll see information on all different kinds of piranahs available.

but like pennreels84 said, 55g isn't big enough for all of them for life assuming they all life to adulthood. good luck and :welcome: to MFK~!!!

jp is right that, that tank isn't going to be big enough. I have four in a 55 (I have a 125 on the way in about a week) They range from about 6 inches to around 11 inches, but with the speed that they swim a 55 is def. not enough room. Fun fish to keep...one of the first type of fish I ever bought...found it surprisingly easy to keep them.

post pics, please I am curious to see what they are if they are not rb's. How much did you pay for each also could help determine what they are without a picture.

Only other shoaling piranha you may have gotten is caribe, piraya, macs, or geyri, but geryi and piraya are 100+ a fish, caribe are usually over 50$ and macs arent that cheap either.

they could be wimples. If not they're going to need a bigger tank. Hopefully she didn't sell you a school of serras... Although if you bought a school of geryi's I'm way jealous...

and finding 1" caribes is very difficult at this time of the year. but sure about 1" pirayas, never seen any that small for sale.
