Hello all,

So I bought my girlfriend her first aquarium and she is really into natural tanks with live plants. Personally, I do not know anything about keeping plants alive (I keep mostly large aggressive fish) in the aquarium, so I did what any other person would do and bought her a book and told her when she finishes the book we will start on her tank.

We all know you can get a good amount of info from a book but it's not always as good as experience. So I was wondering if some of you could drop some helpful info on what good beginner plants are, what their needs would be, good substrate (I found a "live" planted aquarium substrate at a local store), and other helpful tips..

The tank is 55 gallons..

THANKS!!

first off iron is a really good suplement for tanks but if you use that you cant overdose or you'll get a bad case of algae. as far as substrate, theres a couple you can use for plant use, i use flourite but you can also use clay, sand works decently but the trick is to have at least 2-3 inches off the tank bottom so the plant roots can grow and spread. if you really wanna go a step further you can buy a CO2 system that plants absolutely love but they tend to be expensive ranging from 150-250 depending on tank size but if its a densely planted tank and more than about 30 gallons youre going to want one

oh and by the way if your a begginer a really good plant to use is any kind of crypt because there really cool looking and dont require alot of light and arent too sensitive to water quality

Awesome!! Thank you for the advice!!

I agree ^^^

Start simple, and small, and work your way up. There is a lot to learn, and a lot to buy. Take it in baby steps.
