I need to know what substrate you guys recommend for starting a planted aquarium...

While there are several designed for that I did mine back in the day with sand. Do you plan on high lighting, ferts and CO2?

Lighting definitely t5 dual strip, still unsure if I want to use co2

I'm thinking about starting with the fluval planted tank kit it comes with everything needed to start a planted tank its only 7.9 gals but I can learn from it. Better to screw up on a small tank then ruin 100s of dollars worth of live plants

If your so inclined it's also a good time to experiment with diy CO2.

I found the instructions elsewhere on line. Yeast generators are easy but smell bad when changing. You can buy setups but not cheap. Don't buy the cheap ones if you go that route.

I just ordered the semi auto co2 system from drsfostersmith.com yesterday. It can handle up to 200 gallons but you regulate it yourself so you could turn it wayy down. Then you get a co2 tank from anywhere that sells paintball stuff. Fluval makes a co2 system as well but it only takes fluval tanks, which is a pain since they're expensive and the bottle is ruined when you pierce it. Going with a better system saves money in the long run since you have your own tank that is very cheap to get refilled.
