Hi all, just purchased my first ever group of tiny little long-finned albino bristlenosed plecos. The intention is to grow them out and breed them because they sell like hot cakes but Ive never kept plecos before and wanted to make sure I did it right.

I tossed the group of them who are all about an inch long into a 15 gallon with glass covered in green algae. I know they'll pick off leftover food from the other fish as well but should the algae provide them with enough to be the bulk of their diet? Id rather have them cleaning the algae out of my tanks than buy algae wafers at the store.

I also wanted to know how long they can wait before they need driftwood to much on? Chances are I'll grab some tomorrow anyways, but if not will they be ok without it for a month or two or three? :p

Lastly, just to see if my buy was good, how common are long finned albino bristlenoses around you?

Thanks!

Those are pretty common by me. I saw a dozen or so on a halved zucchinni the other day. Do you have any breedind cones avail. to you? I have heard these are great for breedind BN's. Clean water and good diet is all they really need. The 15 gal. might be on the small side though.

Thanks for the replies. I probably wont have pics up for some time as I dont have a camera for the time being :)>. The 15 gal isnt their permanent home, just a growing on tank for a little bit which I chose because of its dense algae. Going to be moving 2 hrs away in under a month so it didnt really matter where I put them since all my fish will be moving soon. Theyre still tiny though.

You have tons of the albino long finned plecos near you?

Yes... someone must have a breeding group that supplies a few shops by me. Longfinned, albino, and calicos. There seems to be different types being discovered/made all the time.

Congrats on breeding them. Don't see them to often here, but I admit I don't go looking for them either.

They are available in this part of the world (NZ), not rare or anything, but popular and easy to sell.

The 15 gal will be OK for a breeding tank, but only for a pair or trio. 2 adult males will probably fight for territory all the time and not get around to breeding. So just leave the best male and the 2 best females in there when they are mature.

Feeding, they will clean up the algae pretty quick. After that you will need to supplement their diet with algae tabs and fresh veges if you want them to grow and breed.

The driftwood is recommended as a long term thing, but I dont think it's critical. They will be OK for months without it.

Good Luck

Ian
