I am planning on making my own pond this summer. I would like to do a couple Koi and some floating plants. Living in Ohio, I read I would need to have it at 4' deep to get below the freeze line. The shape and dimensions are up in the air right now. Im still doing a lot of research, not sure about wiring the pumps and stuff. In my neighborhood, most people do not have fences. In fact, we are only aloud to have two styles. One is a 3 foot iron style and the other is a 3 rung wood post style. I do not have a fence and would like to keep it that way. Having a pond this size, would I be required to have one? If so, I may have to figure out the maximum depth without needing one and switch my stock to something I can easily bring inside for the winter. If all else fails, I may create a raised pons at some point. Thanks for any info :D

I think the fence depends what the laws are for were you live. My town I dont need a fence but 3 towns over you need one if its over 3 feet

Check local regs. Usually if over 2' you need a fence around the yard. 4' deep is nice, but not necessary. Mine is only 2' and have never had any issues. Koi and goldfish + albino channel that is close to 14" now. Natives don't need the depth either. The main thing in winter is to provide a hole in the ice for gas exchange.

I would also never think of bringing fish in each year, unless they were breeders of some money making tropicals....
