hey so i am getting 2 2.5 inch fahaka puffers and i would like to know how to raise them, i did some reading and first ima buy 5 ramshorn snails and put them in the 30 gallon were the pufffers will be grown out to about 4 inches, so that the snails reproduce but how do i get them to reproduce i just put them in and they go at it

also how do i breed ghost shrimp just throw them in to and they go at it, im thinking of buying a clump of java moss to see if that helps the snails and shrimp reproduce, and will the snails live at 85 f, so ima feed the puffers snails shrimp, and mini pellets, and frozen mysis shrimp,

So the questions are
how do i breed ramshorn snails
how do i breed ghost shrimp
whats the growth rate on fahaka puffers can they live together up til 4 inches,
thank you

I just dropped a decent size, probably a dime size, ramshorn in my dwarf puffer tank last week and now I'm completely overrun with snails. I've only got one dwarf in there now and need to pick up a second one.

The Fahaka will be 10-12" at about one year old. I don't think you're going to be able to keep two of them in the same tank either.

thanks for the info but right when i was about to pay for my puffers in the vendor section the seller sold them to somebody else , so mods please close this thread

Even though you said to close the thread...

Just as a heads up for future... i don't think Ghost Shrimp reproduce in F/W, they need brackish conditions...

Also, with fahaka's they grow up so quickly that its almost not worth trying to breed ghost shrimp, on the other hand, i would advise Marble Crays IF they are legal in your area... since with the hard shell it would at least help keep your puffers teeth trimmed...

k i am keeping this thread up jsut in case i ever buy a puffer like a fahahka

This ^^^^

You will also have to dedicate one tank for your fahaka :)

Ghost shrimps are not worth breeding....

i read those site already but i just wanted a short simple answer, also i wanted to see how you guys do it because everybody does things different

I do not breed anything for my fish--I already have too many tanks. I buy crunchy foods (listed at that site) & recently grabbed up hundreds of snails from a local lake. I
froze them & defrost all my frozen foods in vitamin water.

I can't imagine trying to propigate food in my fahakas tank... he will kill stuff just for the sake of killing it. He's a very smart fish, but a ruthless one as well. regularly he trys to attack my husband anytime he cleans the tank or brings food... I'm working on trying to teach him to spit water lol.. he's so very motivated. part of it I think is boredom. so I am trying to come up with some "toys" that are safe for him to destroy that won't compromise his water. our lil' guy went from approx 2" to about 5" so they do grow rather fast. and he is very dirty.

PP I'm curiouse as to how safe it is to collect and use snails from the wild even if they are frozen as it doesn't destroy all bacteria or parasite the snails may have. and the toxins often found in the same habitate snails lurk?... I know the DNR uses herbicides and toxins in our marshes/lakes around here to control invasive species. Or do you collect them from a private source? I know some peopel will collect and QT them like nightcrawlers.. if so.. do you know approx how long it would take ot flush any toxins from their system? for some reason I can't breed snails to save my life.. but I know some places I can collect.. but I don't trust the water source they're in.
