hi guys , i got a 180g with a baby silver aro , sand as substrates also got my constant WC system running on it ...

im wanting to get a ray or two , the only decent priced ones i can find around her are reticulated rays ... i read there hard to keep? if so , how so?
also i got a pack of 6 pictus cats i was thinkin of puttin in the 180g.. but im guessing there a no go with rays?? also how do u sex a ray??

Males have claspers. Most catfish, if not all, are not good mixes with rays.

yep males have claspers, 2 little winers below the tail.

my advice is wait a bit more if necessary, but start with a motoro... retics are very delicate... ;)

oh and you should get rid of catfish and plecos...

i have my rays with 7 arowanas (5asian 2SA), a tigrinus and a tsn

ok , i dont have the cats or any plecos in the tank there in seperate tanks , right now theres just the aro hes about 6" , how much should i expect to pay for a motoro? theres one at a chain lps they want 500$ Can. ? its about 6-7"

DONT GET ANY RAYS UNTIL YOU ANSWER EVERY QUESTION U HAVE..

Like food, tankmates, temperature, decor, etc...

Start out with ONE ray at a time. BUT READ UP ON THEM A LOT BEFORE THE PURCHASE.

500$ is way overpriced. Look thru the sponsors on here, MAKE SURE U LOOK at most of them, and then you will find a better deal. ALSO TRY AND VERIFY THAT THE RAY IS EATING WELL BEFORE YOU BUY IT< AND MAKE SURE U FIND OUT WHAT IT IS EATING><Mine cant resist worms!

i know for decor go sand or bare bottom , i have sand , and nothing pointy or sharp , theres nothin else but sand
i know they do best with top swimming fish like aro's and non aggresive fish
temp 78-82
and foods like u said worms , blood worms , sinking pellets , shrimp....

ive done lots of searchin around on the web , and i figured 500 was over priced , i just wanted to get more info from here , i always research then research more b4 i buy fish

ive also found a teacup sting ray at a good LPS around here the guy asked me if I wanted to feed it , even without me asking , i said sure so he handed me a chunk of frozen blood worms and he sucked them up fast, he was goin for 89.99$ but he was around 5-6" the reticulated are 79.99 at a diff shop but are 3-4"

80-90$ is Still over priced, I got my teacup Retic for 50$ and thats overpriced, the store buys them for around 8$ a piece. Thats a lot of profit, the LFS near my school has them for 35$.

I ordered an awesome Ray from Maxinout13, 130$ including shipping, take a peek at him. and his tank setup. THE RAY ON THE LEFT(Brown) is the Yepezi from Maxinout(it was skinny in that pic it was right out of the shipping bag and he was STARVING), the grey Ray is my Retic from a LFS.

Its really nice to see somebody who does the research before the ray is starving in the tank.

Datnoids/Aros/ go excellent with rays, me i have Geophagus and Datnioides.

Any other questions please do ask, or PM me, ill try and help you.

He lives in Canada and thats the average going rate up here. The motoro he has access to are over priced, the "teacups" are right on par. I worked in a few LFS and the cost of retics are roughly $40-50.

The suggestions for US stores don't really help either. By the time shipping and boarder fees are covered it will cost him way more than finding something locally.

Tychevelle, like others have said retics can be alittle tricky with feeding at small sizes and can go on hunger strikes which can be daunting for a new ray owner. Motoro's are generally a more hardy fish. Keep your eye open to see if you can find a better priced motoro.
Where abouts are you located? Around Winnipeg you can expect to pay anywhere from $150-200 for a 5" motoro. $70-100 for 5" retics

Good luck
