I have 5 RBP's I have 2 that are about 2 inches in a hexagon tank its 35 gallons and i have 3 other that are about the size of a dime in a 10 gallon tank. In both tanks i use black water extract and i have some good filtration on both tanks. I plan on getting another 110 gallon tank soon i already have one for my 3 Oscars catfish and hoplo. I want to setup my pyra tank differently I want it to be as close to their natural habitat as possible. Can someone give me advice on how to setup this tank for them. I heard that i could use peet moss instead of carbon in the filters to make the water darker for them and using drift wood. I want to put live plants in the tank with them I cant seem to find any information on what kind of plants i could use though. What kind of filters could i use or is there any DiY projects i can try to save money.

I have never heard of using moss in filters.
You don't need a dark tank unless thats just the look you are going for they will adapt to the light faster then you think.

As for what filters you could use. I use 2 penguin 350Bs and a FX5 on my 125. and it works out well. Along with 50% water changes a week. and my water stays pretty clear.

But might I sugest that you get a third P for your tank that has only two Ps do not do well with 2 in a tank the more aggresive one WILL eat the other. but with more then two they have a better chance of not eating each other.

Hope you can get your new tank set up soon Ps grow very fast if feed right and have good water conditions.

Yeah i know i need another redbelly in the other tank but my local store only have babies if they eat each other then im screwed its a hexagon tank so its very deep they have room to run from each other they are only a 2 inches from tip to tail they look happy and get along surprisingly well i feed them crayfish they are more of a team than enemies at the moment i think its better to feed them those for now so they stay occupied with prey rather than with each other till i get the new tank.

If they get along GREAT then good for them it doesn't happen like that all the time

did you ask if they could get larger? I know thats what I did. I had mine when they were about the same size as yours (2") and I wanted to get more and I asked if they could get me more of the same size b/c I too was worried about them getting ate. And I got lucky I think and they did get them to me..

you should put other fish in your hexagon tank and get a regular tank for your p's [:

p's in a hex is weird.. o.0

need info? go to

piranha-fury.com or piranha-paradise.com

If you want it to be similar to their natural habitat, go with a heavily planted tank, think underwater rain forest, which is essentially what they live in in the wild. Lots of branches, vines, sand substraight, and plants. Piranhas appreciate alot of hiding spots. As far as darkening the water, I have heard of this being done but it is unnessesary. The fish don't really care either way and it only obscures the view of your tank.
