Hey guys, new to the site. Want to get into salt water, wondering what you guys would suggest for a good starter reef tank? i was looking at the 29 biocube it looked pretty neat, and has everything you need to get started. would i be able to have a thriving reef tank in there? or would i have to upgrade the lighting etc. or would it just be beter to buy a regular tank and make my own sump? what is my best bet for quality/price?

You can get by with the standard lighting if its a FOWLR setup. If you want corals then your gonna need to upgrade the lighting. They have lighting upgrades that are designed for the biocube. They also have a drop in refuge that I would recommend getting. As for quality/price goes I think that the biocube is the way to go. They are very well designed IMO.

The bio cube is a good deal for a tank that comes hassle free. I suggest this if you just doing a little reef, because you don't need to buy any other parts. The lighting should be enough.

The problem is they are expensive, but you wont save much money buying something smaller than a 55. The clean lines they provide are somtimes worth the price. I personally would never buy one but for a beginner they can be well worth the price.

Keep in mind you couldn't put hardly any fish in there, and anything bigger i would build up my own setup.

thanks for the insight. i may just wait a bit to convert my 100 gallon corner tank over to salt eventually. I think a corner would make a prety badass reef

Hell yea that would be a badass reef. :headbang2

It will be expensive though. Make sure you count for the lights and rock and total cost before you decide. I always say its going to cost me 40$ a gallon for reefs, then i save money on the way. You may spend 1/6 of that actual cost but its always good to know what you would pay commercially for that.

They do offer a lighting upgrade...but the PC (I believe...?) that it comes with should be good enough in there for softies, most lps, and some low light sps.
