okay im just starting up a 8 gallon tank its a fluval i liked the shape and size so i went with it but it has a 13-watt daylight compact fluorescent light that came with it for growing plants and what not would this be sufficent for zoanthids and things along those lines?, prolly a dumb question but hey.

it might work, but im pretty sure you would need acticnics, i forget where but i think i read somewhere that the spectrum is necessary for corals. I know they sell a dual daylight/acticnic pc bulb as ive got two of them on my 10g.

Light spectrum isn't right in a plant bulb.
Either try to find a light that is designed for reef tanks that will fit your fixture, or get a new light.

And to asing, actinics aren't necessary for corals to survive. They allow the corals to show off, if you will, some of their colours.

+1...atinic light is not needed at all for coral growth, and there are many studies proving it.

Its all about how pleasing the colors will be to your eyes.

People that are farming corals are doing so without atinics, because the lower kelvin bulbs grow corals faster.

I think you should try some easy softies, and see what happens. If it is meant for plants, those should work.

The spectrum in a plant bulb won't matter if it's a true plant bulb which are usually around 6700K. You can run just about any temp bulb and still get coral growth. I've used both 6700K and 10000K on my saltwater tank and both did equally well as far as growing corals.

thanks guys it is a plant bulb supposedly and thats the reserch i came up with the the kelvin didnt really matter that much but it was the spectrum but i will look for a light either way before i start to get any frags right now this bulb is doing well with growing things on my live rocks

okay so i was looking into a coralife mini but its only 12w 1 6w that is 10k and a 6w blue light i dont know if it wil be any good tho it is hard to find a small set up that will fit on does anyone have any sugestions of what will work but not be overkill
