I am new to saltwater, i have been doing freshwater for the last 13 of my 20 years on this planet. I have a 55 gal that I want to convert to saltwater, and I have a limited budget right now, so I cannot do a real reef. ANY info would be really appreciated.:nilly:

Thanks everybody

the giggest money saver that i've found (because of the cost of it around me) is to seed base rock with live rock, instead of just buying all of your live rock. also, make sure to FULLY cycle your tank. and take all precautions to avaoid contracting ick in your tank, it's a real pain to get rid of.

The most important piece of equipment you will buy is a protein skimmer, to keep your nitrates low. And buy some good quality salt, like Reef Crystals.

The best advice I can give you is to follow the advice of the guys on this forum. You have already received information from two of the best guys on this site. I myself, ever see some great information from BIGgourami. To save money on equipment and rock try eBay. I have saved a fortune on rock using eBay and BIGgourami's advice. If there is anything I can help you with,I will be more than happy to, but the best advice you can get is from the other guys.

Also recommend you use a CaribSea live substrate, cycle with Damsels and Biospira, and 1 lb of live rock per gallon minimum. A varied diet is very important for marine fish, as little is known about their actual diet in the wild.

nice thread, looking forward to seeing what else pops up on here, i was just wondering the same things about when i move my fish out of my 55 to a 600 gal plastic tub and making my 55 a salt.
