In the garage
I've had freshwater tanks all my life, and I finally decided to try a saltwater tank. I have a spare 20 gallon high that i wanted to use, but I also have a spare 20 gallon long. I think I'm just going to stick to fish only for now. So what all do I need to get it up and running and what kind of fish can I keep in it?

There are plenty of fish you can do in a 20. I would stick to damsels and maybe clownfish if you want to keep it simple as they are pretty hardy. Keep in mind the smaller the salt tank the harder it is as it is more delicate with less water, but if you are not doing corals it wont be too bad. Things you will need:

Heater
Powerheads (for flow a must in salt tanks)
Sand (I like the fine argonite)
Live rock (helps with bio filtration)
Lights (no special requirements if no corals or inverts) I would still do a high rating bulb or a 50/50 for color preference.
Good filter
HOB protein skimmer (I don't think this is really necessary on a fish only tank but some will disagree)

^ what he said, don't get discouraged by using a small tank for your first salt i did the same thing, had a random 16 gal sitting around and went for it, patience is the best tool for saltwater and salinity and ph :P goodluck!

So what temp do I need to keep the tank?
