Hi,

I have a 150 gallon glass aquarium that I am considering changing into saltwater. The tank is 72" x 18" x 24!?!

I have 2 Canister filters:

Hydor Professional 450 External Filter

AquaTop CF400-UV

I have 2 air pumps (both with 2 outputs)

And a weird light (1 blue fluorescent tube and 1 white fluorescent tube)

I have clay substrate and sand over it.

Anyways...

I personally have never done a saltwater tank and kind of want to try it.

Questions:

What else would I have to buy?

Would these filters work?

Do I have to remove the clay substrate?

Oh and the glass is tempered so I can't drill into it (that is the reason I am hoping the Canister filters would work

Thanks :)

Canister filters are nitrate factories if not cleaned every few weeks. You’re better off with a sump, protein skimmer, and perhaps a phosban reactor like “two little fishies” with phosban media I buy in bulk on amazon. ASM is my favorite skimmer it’s a great bang/buck. Always overskim, IMO.

Clay has to go. You can either do sand or go barebottom. Get a refractometer rather than the swing arm hydrometer. Be sure to calibrate it.

I hope this helps!

Make a diy above saltwater sump.

I recommend the following easier to keep species (not all are compatible with each other but these are good options for first salt tanks).
Small group of niger triggers (they school!).
Banded serpent stars.
Snowflake moray.
Any hawkfish.
Most damsels.
Tomato clownfish.
Purple tang.
Picasso trigger (aggressive!)
Striped bulldog puffer.
Saddleback Toby.
Colombian "shark" catfish.

LOL!.....chicken.The amount of live rock depends on what type of fish and or corals you intend on keeping.

Well, i was thinking fake corals...
I already started making the AMAZON RIVER BIOTOPE in the aquarium...

i am thinking about doing a small 5-10 gallon nano coral tank with like 2 clown fish (hopefully breed them?)

Corals and live rock aren't necessary for any of the fish I mentioned,
For a nano tank how about 2 clowns from 2 different suppliers (so you aren't inbreeding)
And one frogspawn coral (which replaces an anemone so the clowns can feel secure).?
