New to sand questions?

I put sand in a 55gal with my hatiensis, and they spit the sand in the filter intake and completely destroyed the motor. How can I prevent this and still get good filtration. I cut the intake so that it wouldnt be close to the bottom but that didnt matter. They literally swim up to the intake with sand and spit it in.

So you and your filter system have been outsmarted by your fish??????



Sorry, I think a sponge around the filter inlet would probably do the job. It is probabaly a good thing your fish don't have middle fingers because I think they are trying to tell you what they think of the filter you gave them.

Lol, I completely agree with the middle finger thing, its bad enough I occasionally get splashed with water.

As much as I like sand that is why I never went in that direction.
