Feeder Fish
Well, a little about me. I have been keeping fish and herps all my life. Have about 40 fishtanks, 15 of which are salt water. (my only huge larger fish is a Picasso Triggerfish about 10") I also have ball python, cherry head tortuous, 2 40g vivs with Azureus dart frogs in one, Cobalt Tinc in other, also have corn snake, tarantulas, pacmans, water dragons, and whites tree frogs.

I've always loved stingrays, and only recently thought of having one of my own. I've been reading extensivly through this site, and though there is some amazing information, I still have some questions.
I've seen some of your "monster" tanks, and am amazed at the size of some of them. Unfortunately I dont think I'll be doing any 6,000 gal tanks. I was however thinking of doing a decent sized base, but shallow tank. Somewhat inspired by the aquarium in my state. I was thinking 18-24" deep, and a base of 8'x4' or 8'x4'. The tank would not have side viewing glass/acrylic, and instead be built w/ concrete and lined with epoxy.

Not sure if this tank is large enough? And also, saltwater vs. freshwater stingrays? My largest concern is safety, as I would hate if my stingray stung my g/f, not because it would be sad, but because I'd get my ass kicked for laughing as I did when she tried to feed my triggerfish. I for one, would like to have a shallow tank so that I can hand feed them.

That tank should be fine for almost all SouthAmerican rays.

I cant comment on SW rays.

As for safety....be smart. Rays are far from aggressive, but you dont want to harass one either. Most will even allow for light handling and hand feeding.

Oh, and WELCOME to MFK!!

Thanks! I've spent most of the day browsing through the threads, some amazing tanks out there. I hope someone chimes in on the saltwater vs. freshwater rays. As far as water quality goes, I wont have any problem doing either one as I have the facilities to keep my 40 other aquariums both salt and fresh water. Actually buying the stingray will be more challenging as I only have 1 LFS that is reliable in terms of marine fish. And the only place in the town that knows what they're talking about lol. And I'm not sure they can get any in, if I requested it. So in terms of purchasing a stingray, do any of you have any suggestions?

you will want perfect water quality either way... most freshwater rays are very hardy and the salt ones are more sensitive.... perfect water params are needed for both.... search arround the sharks and rays section in the saltwater forums for better info on the salt rays... welcome to mfk....

Welcome to MFK!

I think FW rays are easier to manage as far as water changes and maintenance. Saltwater rays can be messy and expensive to maintain with water changes.

I also think most of the FW rays have nicer patterns and better personality..
