So i've never kept snakeheads before, but today i picked up this little guy, a channa micropeltes apparently (or so i think?)

Can anyone give me any info regarding keeping this fish, like, how big does it typically get in a tank, how's it's aggression level with other fish (cichlids), and genereally if you have any tips or general info, that would be great!
Basically any info other than the "paper facts" which is usually not much accurate when it comes to the real world.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Here's a picture of the lil dude, hanging out, away from the big predators :headbang2:naughty:

Yes thats a Micropeltes. Realistically 24" minimum so at least an 8' tank. Aggression varies but nine times out of ten once it get 12" + your cichlids will start to be knocked off. They tend to be quite nervous and shy when they are small particulaly if they are alone.

Looks good. will be a real charactor.

Thanks alot for replying jelly.

I guess my upgrading plans is due sooner than i thought!

Do you reckon i should go grab another 2 to form a trio?

He hasn't fed yet, but in the store, the guy put like 5 guppies in the tank where there were 4 of them, and they were gone in a split second.
I guess he's just acclimating.

It would be good to have a couple more but you might find when they get bigger they reduce their numbers back to one. I would try and stick with the one for a little while and see how well it gets on. Once settled they are very hardy and eat very well. I would expect about 1" growth a month upto 12" to 15" then it will slow down a bit.

Awesome info thanks!

Well i guess i could just sell them once they get bigger, and stick to the 1.

:)

Hey Hr,

Nice specimen you got there. Yes, you can add another one or two for the time being but when they get bigger they might and will fight so be careful. About the tankmates, if they are with not so aggressive fish and doesn't occupy the surface then it is ok....
My Channa Marulius is the boss of the surface now nobody dares to go near him, including my aro, oscar and gold severum.....

Have fun with your first channa!

Thanks alot for replying BenSow.

Yeah the plan is i'm gonna sell 2 of them back to the store i bought them at once they start fighting/get too big.
Hopefully by then i'll have my new tank up and running, if not i'd have to sell the third one aswell :(

How long do you reckon it would take for them to reach 10"?
