I've recently been doing a lot of research on keeping salt water stingrays and am seriously considering getting into the hobby and had a few questions about my plans so far that I could use some information on.

I'm looking at getting a 240 gallon tank dimensions are 72"x24"x30" the 24" being the width which I've heard might be to small for rays. I'd like to get two california rays ideally, and a few other compatible fish added in.

What fish would work well with these stingrays?

I have no plans of jumping into this hobby and being unprepared. I am on a budget but am willing to wait if I have to so I can do things just as they should be. I was also wondering if anyone had any good ideas when it comes to searching for a suitable tank, so far craigslist has almost been my best friend for that but maybe you guy have other options?

I guess I'm really just wondering as far as stingrays go what can I do with a tank that size. There's a lot of different information online it can be kind of confusing.

Appreciate any help thanks.

Hi Zagam, welcome to the nut house LOL

Brave man asking this Q, have a look at the other thread by Steveo asking `pleeeeeeeese help`

I am not sure on the rays you want to keep as i dont know the size you will be getting or how big they grow.

IMO a tank of that size will be ok for young rays but as said depends on the size they grow to and how big they are when you get them.

Have a look in the search box to see if anyhting come up with info on your rays.

Good tank mates that work with me are aro`s, silver dollars, and i have red severums, with a TSNxRT, but as said again depends on ray size as they could eat the tank mates. Make sure the tank mates are not able to fit in the rays mounth, this does give a good variety but keep on the quiet side/less boysterious fish.

Can't tell you a whole lot about saltwater rays. I've had salt water tanks before and had some really cool fish but got out of it because water changes on a salt tank are a pain in the butt...and expensive. Most of the web sites say that cali. rays stay under 15" disc...but many say that about motoro's. Lol. Fresh water rays are much more beautiful than salt and water changes are easy ( less cost ), but to properly house the larger more colorful ones you need a tank at least 30" wide. A 240 would definitely last a few years, but eventually a upgrade would be needed.

he wants 2 saltwater cali rays. im pretty sure aros, silver dollars, severums, and tsns dont work.

i think the saltwater section will have more info for you. but i do think there is some types of salt water rays that can live out there life in a 240 just dont hold me to that since i stay in the freshwater section.
