i'm new to suger glider and looking to get one. I understand everything it intails to have one. I know that want to build it a cage but need some ideas of how to go about that. like what size wire fencing, the frame(wood type) and if it should have a glass/plexy glass bottom. also what size is better? bigger or something smaller. i know it sound silly but i know nothing about building a cage and what it needs. please help me so i can setup the cage before i get one. also do you think just buying a premade cage will be better for the glider?

one last question is it better to get a male or female first. i know they need to be in groups but need to know what is better for me to start with. also do you think $250 is too much to pay for one? i found a nice place that sells them for that. but not sure. seeing alot of people selling them for 150 or around that

having had 2 of them.... a min of 4'x4'x4' is what i recomend.... and should be the min for them... also these are the kind of animals you dont keep one of... they are very social and need others... the cage needs to be rearanged all the time to keep them stimulated and they need constant attention.. http://www.sugar-gliders.com/
great place for supplies and gliders...

what the heck is 4x4x4 have to do with what i said. and everything else you said. that has nothing to do with what i asked. what i asked is: is it better for a big or small cage and what to make it out of? not a min size. also i did state i know everything else about what a glider needs. i don't need to be directed to a web site in witch i already know what it's saying. and doesn't answer any of the question

wow, dont be a jerk, he was just trying to help.

-the wiring cant be more than 1/4" in any direction. if they can get their head through they can and will escape. the wire needs to be pvc coated because some types of metal are not good for them and they will get UTI from them.
-the frame probably should be PVC because urine will soak into the wood frame, and that doesnt smell good.
-you should probably have a mesh floor (like the walls) with a drop pan to catch feces. they are very messy
-bigger is better. i got a premade one from. Tails-2-Scales
- you should not get just 1 glider at a time. unless you can literally spend 8 hours a day with it. they are colony animals and typically live in groups of 15 in the wild. they need company and if they get bored they are very prone to self-mutilation.
- i would suggest starting with females because males smell more unless you have them neutered. and you cant keep 2 males together if they are in tact and you cant keep male and female together unless you want babies. which you dont need as a beginner keeper.
-150 is standard price. find someone who sells them for that much and they will probably give you 2 for 250.
- go to GliderCENTRAL they have a lot of info.
-lastly you need lots of patience and self control to deal with gliders. unless they are raised VERY well they will be scared sh1tless of you when you first get them and they have very large sharp teeth for their size and will use them to defend themselves. Leave them alone for a few days after you get them to let them settle. i hope you know about their diet and if you dont you can learn about it on glidercentral.
if you put in the time and effort you will come to love gliders but they are a large responsibility that take up a lot of time. if you would like any more help feel free to ask.

i agree:banhim:

that's more like the questions i asked. i forgot about the males smelling more. as for the cage. was wondering if i do make a bigger cage will it hurt. i mean i don't want to get this small cage and not have any room for them run around. i do understand they need to be in 2 or more. i'm not saying i wouldn't do that. it's just i have only found them at a pet store for 250. would have to wait a few weeks after i get used to one then get another. i'm starting to think 250 is a bit much. i'm just afraid of getting one some place else and finding out it's not as tame as this one and can't return it. this one has all ready taken to me. and i've seen it 2 times. also dude to them being an exotic animal. in the state of IL to get them shipped or bought any place else other then IL. I will need to contact the goverment and get permission to own them. them get them reged with the state and all that. a long and costly process. so i'd rather stay in the state. as for it not getting enough attention. i have my wife that is home all day with the kids. and is willing to play with it more then 8 hours a day if need be. Now as long as it gets along with the kids. i have a 6 year old, 3 year old and 1 year old. so really going to let the 3 and 1 year old touch him unless i'm there. but if the 6 year old get to know the glider maybe he will beable to help. but that will tell if the glider lets him or not. so really it's not a problem with it getting love. i'm more worried about getting it the right size cage and if it's tame or not. i personaly don't think i could tame one off the bat or not. i'm still worryed that the 250 is a bit much. (but it's so tame) blah

-250 is too much for one. if you truely are going to love gliders then you will love the ones that you get wherever you get them from.
-on the glider central i sent you to they have a list of breeders and a buy/sell place. im sure you can find someone near you.
-dont let kids play with gliders. period. gliders might bite. kid gets hurt/scared drops/hits/punts glider=dead glider.
-bigger cages wont hurt...
-dont get one from a petstore. they are usually more scared/defencive than hand raised.
- they tend to bond with one person and see them as safe. if your wife is the main one who tends to them then they might not be very friendly to you.
